The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for a full professor of small animal surgery. We are seeking an experienced leader who can provide academic and clinical leadership to the small animal surgery section in a fast-paced academic hospital. In addition to providing leadership, the successful applicant will be expected to provide surgery services in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA), to teach in the DVM program, to mentor residents, and to engage in research and scholarly activity, at an appropriate level. Focus and expertise in orthopedic, soft tissue, or general surgery will be considered. The appointment may be in the continuous-term or clinical track depending on the interests and qualifications of the applicant.
The FHSA receives ~35,000 cases per year, providing a robust and varied surgical caseload. The FHSA has a full range of specialties that include diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology, behavior, zoological companion animal medicine, and ophthalmology. The emergency and critical care service provides 24 hour/7 day a week service and is certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center.
The service is supported by intraoperative ultrasound and fluoroscopy, as well as CT, MRI and 2 towers for laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery. Current faculty have strengths in orthopedics, arthroscopy, traumatology, minimally invasive osteosynthesis (MIO), corrective osteotomy and joint replacement, cardiothoracic surgery, and urological procedures. We have strong surgical teams in neurology and ophthalmology that complement our surgical service strengths. Minimally invasive procedures are offered by several other services, providing excellent opportunities for collaboration. Primary emergency coverage is provided by four surgery residents, with backup support from the faculty surgeons.
Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, supported by a Clinical Trials Office. Areas of strength in Clinical Sciences include musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, and nutrition. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community. Additional unique resources at Cummings School include the Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource and the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory. All scholarly activity is valued in the school’s promotions process and the expectations are dependent on the appointment track and assigned time.
The successful applicants will lead a team of 5 or 6 ACVS diplomates. We are looking for candidates who are committed to working collaboratively in a team environment. We seek an individual with leadership qualities and the interest and ability to mentor junior faculty and set a positive example for collegiality and excellent academic citizenship. The position emphasizes excellence in DVM student instruction and resident mentoring. Faculty are expected to assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects. Candidates with expertise in any surgical area are encouraged to apply.
The distribution of time to position responsibilities is dependent on appointment track, with clinical track faculty having higher clinical responsibilities and continuous-term track appointments having higher research and scholarly activity expectations. This position will come with expectations of increased administrative time as section chief.
Minimum requirements include a DVM degree or its equivalent and board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgery or the European College of Veterinary Surgery. Demonstrated clinical excellence and strong teaching and scholarly activity records are expected, as relevant to the track. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated leadership skills and a reputation for being collegial. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Previous experience supervising residents is required and previous mentorship of junior faculty is considered an asset.

Cummings is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre pastoral campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts.
