The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Oklahoma State University is offering a residency in Equine Internal Medicine beginning July 15, 2025, through July 14, 2028. The three-year program is designed to meet the training requirements for certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). Enrollment in a concurrent MS Degree Program is optional. Initial appointment will be for one year, with yearly renewal for a total of three years, pending satisfactory progress.
During the first two years of training, the resident will be closely supervised by a Diplomate of ACVIM. The degree of responsibility for case management the resident assumes will be determined by case complexity and resident. The resident will be expected to be capable of primary responsibility for most medical patients during the third year of the residency. With approval of the supervising Diplomate, the resident will schedule training time with other specialists to comply with ACVIM residency training guidelines. The resident will be allowed elective time allowing them to gain additional experience in specialty areas that suit their interests. Teaching clinical medicine to veterinary students is an important function of the resident. They will also be responsible for teaching a portion of the equine techniques laboratories. Opportunities for didactic lectures in equine elective courses will be available. The resident will be required to participate in organized research efforts including submitting a manuscript for publication. The resident will have the opportunity to gain experience in grant writing to receive both intra and extramural funding. The opportunity to pursue graduate education during the residency is available and requires admission to the Graduate College at Oklahoma State University. Two regularly scheduled resident seminars per year within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences are mandatory. The resident will be encouraged to present at local, state, and national meetings as they progress through their program. Each week offers combined food animal/equine journal club and Morbidity and Mortality rounds, and house officer seminars including all house officers and clinical faculty. The case load at Oklahoma State University provides a unique training opportunity. Our diverse hospital population is influenced by the substantial performance horse industry within the state. Smaller populations such as miniature and draft horses add variety to the case load.
Salary is $50,000 per year. Benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and medical insurance. Annual leave consists of two weeks (10 weekdays) and one week during the Christmas/New Year holidays. Medical insurance begins the first day of the month following your employment date. Depending on your selected coverage, you may be charged a monthly fee for your medical insurance. Professional liability is covered by the Tort Claims Act. Additionally, each resident is eligible for $3,000.00 travel funding during their residency.
Employees have access to a wide range of programs including a university-paid fitness membership to the Colvin Center which offers equipment, classes, and recreational activities.
