The Opportunity: Veterinarian
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking a full-time associate veterinarian to join the veterinary professionals in our recently renovated veterinary hospital. This role is ideal for an experienced veterinarian who values a community-facing practice and desires to deliver high-quality medicine in a mission-driven setting. We are seeking candidates who are available to work at least 30 hours per week.

The veterinary team and associate veterinarians work closely with the chief hospital and chief shelter veterinarian. This role reports directly to the chief veterinarian of the hospital and helps guide and support the veterinary support team including registered veterinary technicians, veterinary students, shelter patient services personnel, client service staff, and volunteers.

Position Summary
- Provides medical services for hospital clients - approximately 80% of the time.
- Provides medical services to animals housed in the shelter – approximately 20% of the time.
- Conducts physical examinations, diagnostics, treatment, and medical documentation for pets of clients in our public practice. Ensures client communications are documented, obtains informed consent from clients for procedures. Creates, delivers, and discusses estimates for non-routine care.
- Opportunity to perform sterilization surgeries, including prepubescent sterilization, and other surgical and dental procedures for shelter animals and clients’ pets.
- Participates or conducts medical rounds for hospitalized patients.
- Assists with the evaluation of medical and disease control protocols for the hospital and shelter.
- Collaborates with the animal shelter and animal behavior departments to support the medical and pharmaceutical needs of animals enrolled in behavior support programs.
- Participates in evaluation and humane euthanasia decisions for shelter and publicly owned animals.
- Provides on-call services for shelter animal emergencies when scheduled and during hospital closures.
- Demonstrates professional leadership through coaching, mentoring, and guiding hospital support staff and volunteers, ensuring ethical standards and sound hospital practices.

What We Offer
The starting pay range for this position is $100,000 – $120,000 earned annually by a full-time employee regularly scheduled 40 hours per week. Compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills. This position is compensated on a salary basis rather than production, supporting veterinarians in providing both client and shelter medicine without pressure related to revenue generation. Additional compensation available for qualified employees who demonstrate the ability to translate for our Spanish-speaking clientele.

Qualifications - Education and Experience
- A minimum of 1 year's experience in public practice preferred, post-graduation from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary medicine
- Currently licensed or willing to obtain a license in the State of Colorado to practice veterinary medicine.
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain a current DEA license and have a current veterinary malpractice insurance policy.
- Must complete and maintain USDA accreditation.
- Proven diagnostic, reasoning, and internal medicine experience.
A pre-employment background check and drug screen are required for all employment candidates not already employed with HSBV.

- Ability to work well under pressure
- Demonstrated ability to handle animals in a manner to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress in the veterinary hospital environment. Fear Free certification as a plus
- Effective communication and time management skills.
- Ability to collaborate well within a team.
- Dental and surgical skills or interest are preferred, but this is flexible.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to keep complete and accurate records.
- Availability for on-call shifts.
- Basic computer skills in a Windows environment are required. Knowledge of AVImark a plus.
Working Conditions and Scheduling
The hospital is open to the public Monday through Saturday. Hospital support staff provide care to shelter and hospitalized animals seven (7) days per week. Weekend availability is required. Veterinarians provide on-call services during hospital closures and Sundays for animals in the shelter. After-hours services for public cases are outsourced to local practitioners.
